Better Bikeways - Phase II

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The City of San José is committed to providing safe, comfortable places for our community members to use bicycles for transportation. We are currently in the process of transforming our streets to encourage more people to use bikes. Better Bikeways – Phase II is bringing big changes to Downtown San José to make improvements for bicycle use.

In 2018 and 2019, the City redesigned several streets to make it safer, more convenient, and more comfortable to bike. With simple design changes like protected bike lanes on wide streets, protected intersections at busy crossings, and traffic diverters on small streets, we focused on providing calm, comfortable, and connected bike routes.

These changes were made possible quickly and cost-effectively using plastic posts to separate people riding bikes from people driving cars. The City is now in the process of making these changes permanent by using concrete and landscaping to upgrade the plastic posts.

The following projects are part of Better Bikeways – Phase II:

  • San Fernando Street Better Bikeway

  • Downtown Better Bikeways “Quickstrike”, including:
  • 2nd and 3rd Street Bikeway Frontage Lane

  • Downtown Protected Bikeways Enhancements

  • Taylor/Mabury Bikeway Connection to Berryessa BART

  • 10th and 11th Street Transit Boarding Islands and Bikeway Frontage Lane

Protected Bike Lanes

Protected Bike LanesBy using inexpensive, traffic-tested materials, we plan to switch the position of parking lanes and bike lanes when streets are already being paved, letting parked cars do the work of protecting the bikeway. These projects will enhance safety on streets that already have bike lanes.

Calm Streets

Calm StreetsThese streets, which currently have light traffic and slow speeds, will be improved at intersections to give priority to people biking and walking. This will help to make the streets more comfortable for people of all ages and abilities without adding dedicated bike lanes.
